What is ÍSAT?

When a child's parents, one or both, are from another country they get special tutoring lessons from a teacher which helps them learn the language. These lessons are called ÍSAT which means students with Icelandic as a second language.

We use a special assessment tool to evaluate their skills and what to emphasize during the school year. But even though your child gets these extra lessons they might need more at home. There are some helpful links below. Some are information about the preschool in general and some are information about how you can help your child's language development, both for Icelandic and their mother tongue.

All links are in English but in some cases, you can see a flag in the left-hand corner of the screen to see what other languages there are. There is also a Google translate tool on top of most websites.

Our team of special education

During the school year 2019-2020 we participated in a development project so we could work as a team in special education in preschools. That project had such a positive effect on both the children and staff that we continued that work.

A few children get special lessons despite not having any sort of diagnosis yet from other professionals. The team works with those children and other children that need help, such as bilingual children. We want to ensure that every need of the child is met in a normal environment, ensure that they are learning what they need to help with and make sure that equality is being maintained regardless of the physical or mental capacity of the child.

The members of the team are: Inda (on leave), Kristjana/Jana, Snjólaug/Diddý, Lilja Hólmfríður/Fríða, Linda, Eva Dröfn, Anna Margrét and Margrét.

The child´s outdoor clothing

It´s important that the child has appropriate clothing for outside playing. That the clothing fits well, it´s warm and according to the weather. It´s also important that the clothing is labeled with the child's name. You need to regularly test the child´s shoes and clothes because they grow up quick and small shoes and clothes are very uncomfortable. At the bottom of your child´s rain suit and snow suit there is usually an elastic band to put under the shoe, so they don´t get wet. That elastic band needs to be renewed regularly.

When it´s cold and wet outside the child needs to have more than one pair of mittens in case the first ones get wet.

The child´s clothing

It´s important that the child's clothing is comfortable, is big enough and clean.

Every child needs to have extra clothing at school and every child has a special box for those clothes. In that box they need to have pants, socks, underwear, a T-shirt and a sweater.

You can see here what kind of clothing every child should have: School clothes

When the child stops wearing diapers or something else causes the child to have to change clothes regularly over the day you need to have more of each.

It´s important to label the clothes with the child´s name.

It´s very important to label the clothing well. There are many companies that sell good quality labels for parents that you can find on the internet. It´s also allowed to use a non-washable inkpen to write their name on the tag.

Instructions during wet season

We often make the mistake that when the child needs their rain suit it´s wet, particularly the ones that have fleece on the inside. That is why we want to ask parents to hang the child´s clothes on the inside out in the cubby when it´s wet or take it home to dry. This also applies to mittens. So that the suit completely dries you must take the boots off. Before you take the clothing back to school you need to turn it right side out before returning it to the cubby.

It´s the parent's job to make sure all the child´s clothes are ready to be used for the day.

It´s the parent's job to make sure all the child´s clothes are ready to be used for the day.
